Professor Qasim Aziz is a renowned Professor of Neurogastroenterology. His career began at the University of Manchester, where he obtained a PhD in 1996 after clinical training in general medicine and gastroenterology.

Over the years, he has held a range of esteemed positions at the University of Manchester, including Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Professor of Gastroenterology. He has been the Professor of Neurogastroenterology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary, the University of London since 2006. Furthermore, he is the director of the Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology, which is recognised worldwide.

Professor Aziz's research has received national and international recognition, including the British Society of Gastroenterology Research Gold Medal and the American Gastroenterology Association, Janssen Award for Basic and Clinical Research. He has published around 200 articles in well-known medical journals, such as Lancet, Gastroenterology, Nature Medicine, and Nature Neuroscience.

His discoveries include identifying the brain centres for swallowing and abdominal pain, the role of psychological factors in influencing abdominal pain, and establishing a translational research programme that aims to understand the mechanisms and treatments for visceral hypersensitivity, which causes chronic abdominal pain. Recently, Professor Aziz demonstrated the association between joint hypermobility disorders, such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and gastrointestinal symptoms in functional gastrointestinal disorders, and this remains an active clinical and research interest for him.

Professor Aziz also has a keen interest in gut manifestations in other systemic diseases, including connective tissue disorders like Lupus and Scleroderma, neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and stroke, and endocrine diseases like diabetes. He is an accomplished international speaker and regularly lectures on his areas of expertise.
