Robotic Surgery
The Princess Grace Hospital is the first independent hospital to have the "da Vinci" surgical robot in the UK.
Benefiting patients and surgeons, the hospital's first application of this highly advanced technology will be robotic radical prostatectomy, or the removal of the prostate gland in men. Prostate cancer causes around 10,000 deaths per year in the UK and is the second most fatal cancer in men after lung cancer.
Clinical results have demonstrated that the robotic technology enables surgeons to perform procedures in a manner which continues to allow their patients to reap benefits associated with MIS, including a reduction in the post operation recuperation period and reduced blood loss, when compared to regular open surgery.
The robotic system allows surgeons to look inside a patient through a binocular type lens from the camera inside the patient. This clearer view of the area being operated on makes it easier for surgeons to work in confined areas, and by minimising tremors which may occur in the human hand, increase the precision of operations.
The London Prostate Centre is located at The Princess Grace Hospital.
