Biography

Mr Muntzer Mughal qualified in 1977 from the University of Manchester and underwent his surgical training in the North West. In 1989 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Surgery in Professor Sir Miles Irving's unit at Hope Hospital in Salford and subsequently moved to the Royal Preston Hospital in 1991 as a Consultant Surgeon with special interests in UGI and Endocrine Surgery. He was involved in the centralisation of O-G cancer for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network, culminating in the opening of the network centre at the Royal Preston Hospital in April 2009. He moved to UCLH in February 2011 as Head of UGI Services.

Muntzer has had a long interest in teaching and training at local, regional and national levels. He set up and ran the North West General Surgical SpR Teaching programme from 1999 to 2010. It was rated the best surgical teaching programme in the National PMETB Trainee Survey for 2010.

Muntzer has served as Regional Specialty Advisor in General Surgery for the North West, and is a member of the SAC in General Surgery. He is currently on the panel of examiners for the Intercollegiate Specialty Board in General Surgery, and has previously been on the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was appointed a member of the Appraisal Committee of NICE at its inception in 1999 and served until 2006. He is currently a member of the Interim Review Mechanism Panel of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
