Dr Shabbir Moochhala qualified in 1998 from the University of Edinburgh in medicine, with a first class intercalated Honours degree in Pharmacology. He gained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2001. His higher training in renal medicine and general (internal) medicine was based at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. His research into the renal molecular physiology of kidney stone disease was funded by a personal Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust. This research led to his PhD thesis: 'What is the function of the ANKH protein in the kidney'' (Institute of Cell and Molecular Biosciences, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2010). Dr Moochhala now leads a clinical research programme to find new ways in which to reduce the recurrence of kidney stone formation in patients. Dr Moochhala's clinical interests are in all aspects of kidney disease, and in addition he can provide a full service as an accredited general physician. His special interests are in the metabolic evaluation of kidney stone disease, electrolyte (body salt) disorders, hypertension and diseases of the renal tubule.
