Getting the right nutrition before, during and after your stay in hospital is essential to assist your recovery, help prevent any complications and optimise your health.
A Registered Dietitian provides a specialist service for inpatients and outpatients requiring nutritional intervention at Princess Grace Hospital.
The dietitian is an integral member of the multidisciplinary team at Princess Grace Hospital and works closely with medical consultants, pharmacy, nursing staff and catering departments to ensure the highest standards of care.
The dietitian provides expert advice for a wide range of clinical specialties including:
- Enteral and parenteral nutrition
- Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis)
- Gut motility disorders
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Hepatic, pancreatic and bilary disorders
- Coeliac Disease
- Malabsorption
- Nutritional support (surgical and oncology patients)
- Bone health (e.g. osteoporosis)
- Dietary deficiencies (e.g. anaemia)
- Diabetes and heart disease
- Weight management (e.g bariatric surgery and disordered eating)
What does a dietitian do?
- Assess nutritional status and individual requirements
- Provide disease-specific dietary advice
- Prescribe enteral and parenteral feeding regimens tailored to meet individual needs
- Advise on therapeutic diets and nutritional supplements
- Use advanced communication skills to facilitate behaviour change
- Provide training and support to staff on all aspects of nutrition
- Develop policies and patient resources in line with current evidence
What is a registered dietitian (RD)?
Registered dietitians hold the only legally-recognised graduate qualification in nutrition and dietetics in the UK and are qualified to treat a wide range of medical conditions and promote nutritional well-being. Registration, awarded by the Health Professionals Council, is an indication that a dietitian is fit to practise and is working within an agreed statement of conduct.
