Intraoperative radiotherapy

The Princess Grace Hospital is able to offer patients intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT). This pioneering new treatment for breast cancer delivers a single dose of radiotherapy into the breast following the removal of a tumour and before the completion of the operation. Patients can then avoid having repetitive radiotherapy sessions over a three to six week period, weeks after their operation.

The renowned pioneer of TARGIT IORT, breast surgeon Professor Jayant Vaidya, is a member of the breast care team at The Princess Grace Hospital. He developed the radical new treatment in the late 1990s, together with a distinguished team of cancer specialists at University College Hospital London.

This novel approach to treating breast cancer uses an Intrabeam® radiotherapy machine. The procedure is called TARGeted Intraoperative radiotherapy (TARGIT) and, in recent years, it has been trialled by breast cancer teams around the world and over 20,000 patients have been already treated.

When you have IORT at The Princess Grace Hospital, you will benefit from:

  • Cutting-edge treatment: The Princess Grace hospital is the first private hospital in the UK to acquire the Intrabeam® machine
  • Access to the best specialists: Professor Jayant Vaidya is one of the UK’s most respected breast cancer specialists
  • Exceptional care – the world-class breast care service at The Princess Grace Hospital gives women a wide choice of treatments and options.
