Are there any extra precautions I should take after discharge?
Iodine-125 seeds are sealed sources and the radioactive material will not escape. Objects that you touch or use do not become radioactive and your normal body waste is not radioactive.
Whilst there are no formal restrictions on your activities when you return home, we advise that you comply with the following guidelines for a period of two months post-implant:
Women who are, or may be, pregnant should not spend any prolonged periods of time closer than one metre from you (for example sit in separate arm chairs instead of next to each other on a sofa). There is no limit to how much time they may spend with you at this distance. Apart from this there is no need for you to treat them any differently.
Do not nurse babies or children on your lap or sit very close to them for long periods of time. It is fine to cuddle or hold them for a few minutes each day and there is no limit to them being in the same room as you, provided they keep at least a metre away from you.
Sexual intercourse may be resumed two weeks post implant, but condoms must be used for the first two months as there is a small risk that a seed may be contained in the ejaculate. Your semen may also be discoloured brown or black. This is a result of bleeding into the seminal vesicles during the operation and it clears slowly after the procedure.
There are no restrictions on the time you spend, or activities you undertake with other adults.
